How do you get a retail job? How do you actually get a call back from the store after filling out application?

What am I doing wrong? First, I have extensive work history since I was 14, first volunteer, and then office work (with great references!). Sure I don't have retail experience but I have customer service experience which I always emphasize on applications (from hospitals and an Aquarium too, and they are not easy people to serve!) I can never get a store to call me back after I filled out an app. Is it the lack of retail experience? (that doesn't seem to stop 14 year olds at the mall!) The fact the my past jobs paid me ($2-$5) more than minimum wage from the start? That I ask too much/little for starting salary? That I "failed" one of those long personality surveys? (if you can, I mean, I'm great with people and friendly.) And now I've graduated college, I want an extra night/weekend retail position to help pay off my student loans. It almost kills my pride that as a grad, I can't even get a simple retail job! How do regular people do it? I don't mind making min. wage! Advice please?

the problem is you didn't have retail experience. apply during the christmas holidays when they really need retail people and they will hire you. Make sure there is an opening before you apply. Malls do have job boards at the mall office so you can see who is hiring. call them the following day after you've applied and every couple of days thereafter asking for an interview. If you've had the interview keep calling back to see if it's been filled.

Does it really have to be in retail, as there are lots of other jobs you can get. Lots of people begin jobs by telling all their relatives they are looking and asking them if you could contact the place where they work and use their name as a reference, then do that. Seems you need "pull" from the inside.
Reply:You can give it a try. as also you can refer back your own job on your 14. good luck
Reply:a lot of places are "intimidated" by people who have more experience, previous higher paid jobs, and a degree... etc they may feel that you wont take the job seriously or that you will try to "take over"

my best freind was a manager of her own store making 40 k a year and wanted to go back to school.... she just wanted a part time min. wage job and she applied nearly everywhere and not one place called her back.. her brother who has never had a job got calls from the same places that she applied..... i dont think that was just coincidence
